The Youth Responds…

Firstly as youths of this Nation and secondly, as youths of the United National Congress, we the youth of the UNC are very hurt and saddened by the derogatory statements made by Mr. Jack Warner, a Deputy Political Leader of the Party concerning the youths of the UNC. Mr. Warner, a man for whom we had much liking and respect has greatly disappointed us. How could the leader of a political party with which he has freely chosen to align himself, turn out to be so cruel and heartless toward the party in general and the UNC youths in particular?

Mr. Warner claimed in the monthly Newsletter of the Chaguanas West Constituency, Page 8 of Volume 1, Issue 11, November 2008, that he chose the UNC as it is, “the only political vehicle with a driving ambition toward meaningful change,” just a few days before he made such slanderous allegations against the youths of the UNC. Is this the type of lesson Mr.. Warner intends to teach the youth of this nation? I don’t believe the Youth of our Nation are interested in bad talking, and disloyalty! We want to love, support and care for our brothers and sisters. Teach us the kind of love and dedication that the Pandays, Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar and others display.

Furthermore, how is it possible for a man who states that he is ready for the leadership of this party to falsely say, that the youngest member of the Youth Arm is no younger than 50 years old? Is he aware of the strides the UNC has taken in relation to youth in politics? Just to inform him, Mr. Panday has appointed at least four young persons from the Youth Arm all under the age of 27 to Senate. There were even persons in the Youth Arm, under the statutory age limit of 25 whom he eagerly wanted to appoint to the Senate as a demonstration of their zeal and commitment to the fight for the betterment of this country. If my memory serves me correctly, Mr. Panday has appointed the youngest person to the Senate ever in the history of Trinidad and Tobago politics, the chairperson of the Youth Arm, just a week after she attained the statutory age. That is the reality! The UNCA is the only party that recognizes and understands the important role the youth plays in politics. Therefore, a reasonable man should see, Mr. Warner’s statements are very wrong, and most obviously were intended to create friction and division of the UNC in the eyes of the public.

A wise man once said, “Power is not only the greatest aphrodisiac but, it is also the greatest intoxicant-even the smell of it can drive some men crazy!”

Lack of foresight in the failed Agricultural Sector

The Youth Arm of the United National Congress condemns the government on it's lack of foresight in preparing the country‘s development in the field of agriculture. As the world enters, what is sure to be, a global food crisis. This country is blessed not only with oil resources, but also with prime agricultural land. These lands should be used to plant crops to help combat the scourge which is high food prices that has gripped this nation.

The Government has instead decided to construct cheap poor housing on these lands. This housing plan which was used by the P.N.M. in 1981 lead to terrible flooding of the crop lands which led to food prices rising. Sadly the P.N.M. of 2008 has not learned from the past. This is because the same problems are happening and nothing is being done to solve these problems.

The Prime Minister promised to combat rising food prices by initiating.

  1. The creation of mega farms
  2. The creation of apprentice programs for young people to get back into farming
  3. Have Faith

On the first point the country is waiting with abated breath for these farms to come on stream for they have not been implemented along with the Cuban experts coming to  show local farmers how to plant crops.

On the second point there are no youth programs to date to help restart the Agriculture Sector. The program known as Y.A.P.A. has failed to help the young people. The Ministry Of Agriculture has not capitalized on this and it must take responsibility.

On the third and final point Trinidad and Tobago is blessed with a number of religions. The people have been praying for a miracle. Unfortunately the people of this once great nation cannot sleep on a stomach filled with faith. Therefore the Minister of Agriculture must take responsibility and ensure that our nation can be fed. If he cannot do the job then he should resign.

Unacceptable Crime Levels in Trinidad and Tobago

The Youth Arm of the United National Congress condemns the government on it's handling of the runaway crime epidemic that is gripping this once great nation. The National Security Minister has stated that the murder rate shall decrease within three years. When in fact this same minister stated in 2006 that the murder rate will never cross three hundred. In 2007 the murder rate of Trinidad and Tobago reached the highest in our country's history. That number was 395. The murder rate for this year in Trinidad and Tobago stands at 288, and is on the verge of reaching three hundred again. Clearly the Minister's prediction will not come true.

This Minister has failed in carrying out his duty from the minute he was made minister by the Prime Minister. Minister Martin Joseph had a great opportunity to show that he is serious in fighting crime by supporting the Police Service Commission's nomination for Police Commissioner Supt. Williams for the job. This would have shown that he is serious in ridding this country of this crime epidemic. However the minister choose to play party politics by supporting with the rest of the Government against the nomination.

The only people that suffers in the end is the people of this once great nation. This Government has a duty to ensure that our people must be safe at all times and clearly this government has breached this duty. Therefore this Minister of National Security should do the honorable thing and resign for he has failed.

Women's voices must be heard
ALTHOUGH women take up myriad of responsibilities in their daily lives, they do not focus on how the actions of politics and governments affect their lives.

This is something that Afifah Mohammed, Chairman of the United National Congress Alliance (UNCA) Youth Arm would like to change.

Young and energetic, Mohammed, 25, of Cunupia has a passion for setting things right and she would like to see women take a more active role for improvement of life in this country. Read More

He may be baby-faced, but UNC Senator Ryan Spicer is all of 25 and within the constitutional age limit to serve as a senator.

Spicer was appointed a temporary Opposition senator on Monday, replacing UNC Senator Adesh Nanan who is ill.

However, the slightly-built youth—who also delivered his maiden address on Monday—attracted more than his usual share of attention since another paper carried an erroneous report that he was 20 years. READ MORE
